Mentors Needed!

We are currently seeking mentors for the Boys & Girls Club Mentoring Program. Mentors are asked to dedicate at least 1 hour for one day a week to their mentee. Each mentor will be screened (criminal background and drug test) and asked to attend an orientation. The mentor can choose to mentor one on one or with a group of kids. There is plenty of things you can do to help mentor. A big area for the kids is homework. We never have enough people to help in that area. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please come by the O.T. Sloan Unit. You can ask to speak to Shannon Gurwitch or Jonathan York. Our number is 919-776-3525. Below is a link to our Mentor Application.

Taisia Johnson-2011-2012 Youth of the Year, Mr. J-Teen Director

      Great Futures Start Here!
        Annual Award Banquet

Youth of the Year Announced!
Taisia Johnson was named Youth of the Year for the 2nd consecutive year for the Boys & Girls Club. "This was totally unexpected. I didn't think I would get the honor back-to-back," said Johnson. "The Boys & Girls Club means so much to me. I would not be the leader I am today without the staff here." The club holds a special significance to Johnson, as it was a comfort to her during a troubled time. She credits the Boys & Girls Club with seeing her through the most trying periods of adolescence. "The staff here feels like family, the building feels like home, and it is the Club that made me believe that even after difficult struggles, I could continue to be a leader and the very smart young lady that I am," Johnson said. Johnson's 11 years with the club have led her to become a mentor to a group of four young girls. They regularly meet to discuss any issues or fears they have. Through the programs offered at the Club, she has also received her first paying position at Walgreens. Now, with a new plaque in had, Johnson will go on to represent Lee County in the state competition Youth of the Year.
There were 6 other youth vying for Youth of the Year. They were: Unique Lee, Christopher McLean, Gabrielle Judd, Gabrielle Holmes, Shaquille Stepney, and Jerraysheya Fox. All of the kids are winners.
